25mm West Wind - Gothic Horror: Vampire Wars - Loup Garou

For this game, this was the biggest, baddest werewolf available. Again - just a simple Contrast Black Templar over the lot - with no drybrushing after.
Tried something different with the bases using Woodland Sceneic dark foliage, covered with light "Superleaf" scale leaves. Same stuff I used on the ECW hedges.
La Famiglia - here's all the wolfy entries from this particular range. The newer West Wind EotD stuff is done up as are the Blue Moon versions as well.

25mm West Wind - Gothic Horror: Vampire Wars - Giant Wolves

More simple Contrast Black Templar results in one undiluted coat over Wraithbone. They probably should have black gums but I kinda like having their nasty orifices as the focal points.

At left are the Blue Moon "European Timber Wolves" for comparison purposes. This force will have about a score of models in it - a dangerous encounter in their own right or they could be parceled out as obstacles thrown up against the witch hunters from the local coven.

25mm West Wind - Gothic Horror - Vampire Wars - Werewolves

My Citadel Contrast paint experiment moved from ethereal creatures to the many wolfy miniatures I own. You saw the "European Timber Wolves", here are the Werewolves from the original West Wind,Vampire Wars line. For Empire of the Dead, West Wind brought out entirely new figures for this horror subgenre (those are coming soon).

Apart from the mouths and bases, I used exclusively Contrast paints. (L-R, Gore-grunta Fur, Wyldwood, Wyldwood, Snakebite Leather). Unlike a lot of models I've done with mostly Contrast Templar Black, I did go back here and dry brush with Wraithbone again over the whole model - the same color with which they were undercoated.

Pants on the end werewolves are Contrast Templar Black, belts in Wyldwood. Middle pants are Aggaros Dunes, with the belt in Wyldwood.
Some early WIP - I had to mark the bases with the color I used so I wouldn't forget S-Snakebite, G-Gore-grunta. Wolves of course are never blond and red like these, so I'm gonna claim, "it's fantasy - their fur would match that of the human who was accursed with the lycanthropy." Seems reasonable -, but also because I wanted to try these browns out on stuff.

Though brown can be found on wolves, it seems they are mostly grays and blacks and light tans and white. Nonetheless, I needed some way to differentiate these decidedly lesser "wolves" from the bigger, leader types. Wyldwood is the best of these alternative colors in my view.
These are before I went back and drybrushed over them with Wraithbone.

For the wolves on all fours I went with the red eyes, but here for these bipedal ones, I went with the more popular yellow. Not much to work with on these guys - in fact this one;'s left eye isn't even sculpted - a mot uncommon occurrence in these early sculpts.

I also found I had to touch up considerably the Templar Black on the smooth surfaces of the pants with more Wraithbone. i actually tried misixing the two together to see if i couln;t arrive at a middle color and it came out too strange to be workable: super thin and watery, and not quite the right color. so i did what I could with the final portrays revealing where I ended up.

The flash took a split second too long to kick in here, but I love the effect of this darker shot.

Fo minimal effort, I think these came out quite well. If I had to layer them, they'd still clustered in the wolf bin.
My favorite of this lot.

If the quadrupedal wolves comprise the lower ranks, these are one step above in tabletop value, whatever that may be. Easily suitable for the game for which they were created (GH:VW) as well as EotD, CiC, the FFoL horror variant, or whatever else covers this horror subgenre.

28mm Blue Moon - European Timber Wolves

I've mostly moved on from the ethereal creatures project, though a couple figs still linger on the workbench, to do some of the various werewolf encounter sets I have from West Wind and Blue Moon. The figures below were among the easiest to complete and came out nice for EotD, Gothic Horror, Chaos in Carpathia, Frostgrave, or any number of other fantasy or horror themed games.

To match the sculpts, I wanted these deliberately cartoony and sterotypically evil, rank & file wolves. As an aside, I can paint realistic wolves: click here to see the ones I did for the 1812 Retreat from Moscow game for example, but I wanted to see how easy Citadel's Contrast paints would work for this ideal figure type: one that is mostly a single color. In this case, what's become a popular stand by, Templar Black. Yes, all of these were done with a single thick coat over Wraithbone spray primer. As mentioned elsewhere, I tend to heavily dab the paint on rather than flood it, or do painterly type strokes as I see in the GW Contrast tutorials. For this kind of miniature, my method works out great. You decide.

Also, though the fur was very easy to do and took only a few minutes, (I didn't do any additional highlighting there) it does take me a fair amount of time to do all the eyes, teeth and the actual basing to help disguise the manufactured base and to blend them harmoniously with the steel washers upon which they are glued. There's a lot of time waiting for glues, undercoats, and various layers to dry. The vegetation is done in three steps starting with the grass tufts (Army Painter), followed by the light green bushes (Woodland Scenics), then in the third pass, I go and cover up any really ugly parts of the base and to try and blend the terrain in all together with the old Games Workshop standard green flock. For these I didn't really want a riot of colors, but was happy with applying very different monochromatic textures instead.

Enjoy!
Having the flash on looked better then my usual method here but you'll see a mix of both below.
I mistakenly made the individual bases first and then could not, for all it was worth, get a wolf separated from the washer. I was hoping to have a pair of 2-wolf stands here instead of six individual ones, but I couldn't get it done. This was the best compromise. There's only three different sculpts in this 12 figure pack.

Unless you are the pack leader, this is the direction you want to see these things.
I like this shot and enjoy doing the compositions. It was tempting to line them up in a row but I tried to capture the moment when these split off from one another.
I did a flame recipe for the eyes which evokes candy corn here more than anything else lo! Still, very happy with them.
A clear shot of the three different sculpts in the pack. They're fine.
I like this duo especially - ready to pounce!
...and my favorite shot of them all!
Flash on
Flash off
This pack is the stand alone - next up (currently in the final base landscaping stages) are the Blue Moon and West Wind Werewolves. Alas, the Wolfen Jaegers, and the heroes out to dispatch these villains have to be painted in my traditional layering style. More Blue Moon ECW support stuff is also nearing completion. Much more to come!

25/28mm Armorcast Terraform Terrain - Bone Piles

Had these for ages and thought I'd try out Citadel Contrast paints here. You guessed it: Skeleton Horde was the color.
These were of course primed with Wraithbone. I did half at a time so I had something to hold on to and was immediately thrilled. Almost perfect without any further attention.
I decided to do some dry brushing over the lot anyways since it looked a tad too uniform. I used the Citadel Wraithbone brush on first followed by a cream and then finished off with an off white.
I thought about staining some in red as if they were new, but decided against it for these core pieces.
Those are Dwarven Forge Cavern pieces in the background.
Lovely pieces in only a few minutes. My productivity, you may have noticed, has gone through the roof!
